Zhangjiajie National Forest Park sells one multi-day ticket that covers the park, its free shuttle buses and, in the combined versions, the lifts and cableways. You choose a gate, ride the shuttles between viewpoints, and sleep in Wulingyuan town. Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon glass bridge are separate parks with separate tickets.
- Park ticket: one admission valid 4 consecutive days, with the eco-bus network included. Combined tickets add the Bailong Elevator and the three cableways.
- Current price: about CNY 236 for admission with buses in 2026. The all-inclusive 4-day combo was published at CNY 518. Confirm the live figure on the official ticketing page.
- Gates: Wulingyuan (east, in town), Forest Park (south), Yangjiajie and Tianzi. No shuttle runs from gate to gate.
- Bailong Elevator: a 326 m glass lift inside Yuanjiajie, busiest between 10:00 and 14:00.
- Separate parks: Tianmen Mountain sits in Zhangjiajie city, and the glass bridge sits in Cili county. Each sells its own ticket.

What does the park ticket include?
The ticket is one admission for the whole Wulingyuan Scenic Area, valid for four consecutive days, and it includes the free shuttle buses that link the gates and viewpoints. Add the lifts and cableways in a combined ticket, or pay for each ride as you go. Your passport number goes on the booking, and the gate checks the same document.
Hunan’s government announced the combined system in December 2023. Prices change, so treat the numbers below as structure rather than gospel.
“From 21 December, Wulingyuan Scenic Area will sell a single ticket covering park admission, the eco-bus network and the three cableways and one lift: the Tianzi cableway, the Huangshizhai cableway, the Yangjiajie cableway and the Bailong Elevator.”
Hunan Provincial People’s Government, notice of 2 December 2023 (translated from Chinese)
That notice set three products: an all-inclusive four-day combo, a four-ride combo, and a multi-ride combo. Book the all-inclusive version if you plan to use the Bailong Elevator and at least one cableway. The saving is real, and it removes the cash queue at each station. Read the Hunan government notice if you want the original wording.
Students, people over 60 and children get discounts, and the gate asks for the document that proves the age or status. Buy through the park’s official channel or a hotel that issues a paper voucher; either way, the passport number must match. Resellers charge a fee for the same ticket.
Which gate should you start from?
Most visitors start at Wulingyuan gate because it opens onto the town and the Bailong Elevator, and you can walk there from your hotel. Forest Park gate suits the Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai. The two gates sit about 30 minutes apart by local bus, and no park shuttle connects them, so pick one base and stay with it.
| Gate | Where it is | Best for | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wulingyuan (east) | Wulingyuan town, hotels and restaurants on the doorstep | Yuanjiajie, Yangjiajie, Tianzi, Bailong Elevator | Shuttle to Bailong or Tianzi cableway |
| Forest Park (south) | About 30 min by local bus from Wulingyuan town | Golden Whip Stream, Huangshizhai | Walk the stream, then climb or ride to Huangshizhai |
| Yangjiajie | West side, reached by road from the town | Yangjiajie ridge and the cableway | Ride up, walk the ridge, exit east |
| Tianzi | North side, near Tianzi township | Tianzi Mountain and Shili Gallery | Cableway up, then shuttle south |
If you arrive by train at Zhangjiajie West, the bus to Wulingyuan town takes about 50 minutes. The city’s own rail station and airport are 30 to 40 minutes from the park gates.
Local buses run from town to the east gate every few minutes for CNY 1 to 2, and a taxi costs about CNY 15. The walk from most hotels takes 10 to 20 minutes. Whichever gate you use, the ticket check needs your passport and a face scan.
Bailong Elevator or one of the cableways?
They do different jobs. The Bailong Elevator climbs the cliff face in Yuanjiajie and saves about two hours of walking. The three cableways serve Tianzi, Huangshizhai and Yangjiajie. Queue rules decide your day more than the views do, so ride the busy lift early or late.
| Ride | Connects | Saves you | Queue reality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bailong Elevator | Yuanjiajie top to the valley road | About 2 hours of climbing | Worst 10:00–14:00; go before 09:00 |
| Tianzi cableway | Tianzi township to Tianzi Mountain | The long road climb | Busy mid-morning, calmer after 15:00 |
| Huangshizhai cableway | Foot of Huangshizhai to near the summit | About 1 hour of stairs | Short queues, often walk-on |
| Yangjiajie cableway | Valley floor to the Yangjiajie ridge | The ridge approach | Quiet compared with Bailong |
Check the lift and cableway status the evening before. Maintenance closures happen in winter, and wind can stop the Bailong Elevator for an hour without warning. A combined ticket does not guarantee a ride time, so build slack into the morning.
How does the free shuttle network work?
Green buses run on fixed loops inside the park, and your ticket covers them. They link the gates, the lift and cableway stations, and the main trailheads. Waits run from five to twenty minutes, and the last buses leave the inner stops in the late afternoon.
The network is a hub-and-spoke system, not a ring. To cross from the south gate to the east gate you ride to Yuanjiajie, cross the top, and descend by the Bailong Elevator, or take the long valley road. Plan the crossing as a half-day, not a hop.
Drivers announce stops in Chinese, and you can read the signs in both languages. Photograph the route map at the gate on day one, because your phone signal fades in the valleys.
What is a three-day route without backtracking?
Three days covers the park without repeating a cableway. Day one takes the east gate and the elevated viewpoints. Day two uses the Tianzi side. Day three drops to the stream and leaves by the south gate, so you never ride the same lift twice.
- Day 1, east gate. Shuttle to the Bailong Elevator before 09:00, walk Yuanjiajie, then the Yangjiajie ridge, and descend by the Yangjiajie cableway. Sleep in Wulingyuan town.
- Day 2, Tianzi side. Bus to Tianzi township, cableway up, walk the Tianzi viewpoints, then descend to Shili Gallery and shuttle back to the east gate. Two lifts, one town.
- Day 3, south gate. Local bus to Forest Park gate, walk Golden Whip Stream in the morning, then Huangshizhai by cableway or stairs. Leave from the south gate for the city or the train station.
Reverse the loop if you sleep near the south gate. The principle holds either way: one gate in, a different gate out, and no lift used twice. The order also keeps the Bailong queue behind you, because you ride it on day one before the tour buses arrive.
Should you add the Grand Canyon glass bridge?
The glass bridge is not in the national park. It sits in Cili county, about 30 km from Wulingyuan town, with its own gate and ticket. The bridge is sold as part of a canyon package, and a bridge-only ticket is the cheapest version you can buy. Book a time slot, because walk-up sales stop when the hourly quota fills.
Allow half a day. The canyon walk adds two to three hours, and the drive each way takes about 45 minutes. If you have only three days in the park, the bridge is the first thing to cut, because the park’s own viewpoints cover the same scenery at a larger scale.
When are the crowds worst?
Avoid 1–7 October and the Spring Festival week, when domestic tour groups fill every shuttle. April, May, September and October outside those dates give the best mix of clear air and manageable queues. Weekends are busy year-round, and Monday is quieter than Saturday.
Summer brings heat, thunderstorms and the risk that your lift closes. Winter is quiet and cheap, but ice closes some stone steps and the high viewpoints can sit in cloud for days. Check the forecast before you commit to a summit day, and keep one flexible morning in reserve.
Start at the gate by 07:30 whatever the season. The first shuttles leave around 07:00, and the difference between the 08:00 and 10:00 Bailong queue is about 90 minutes.
Morning mist is the reason photographers come in spring and autumn. Cloud fills the valleys at dawn and lifts by mid-morning, so a 07:00 start buys both the mist and the empty viewpoints. In summer the same hour is already hot and hazy.
Where should you sleep?
Wulingyuan town wins for most visitors. It sits beside the east gate, with restaurants, a supermarket and cheap taxis, and you can walk to the ticket check in ten minutes. Sleeping inside the park is quieter but limited, and the city base only makes sense for Tianmen Mountain.
| Base | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wulingyuan town | First visit, early gate starts, food choice | Busy and loud on holiday weekends |
| Inside the park | Sunrise views, slow mornings | Few rooms, simple food, no nightlife |
| Zhangjiajie city | Tianmen Mountain, trains, flights | 50 min to the park gate each way |
Is Tianmen Mountain part of the same trip?
No. Tianmen Mountain is a separate park above Zhangjiajie city, with its own ticket and a 7,455 m cableway from downtown. It is famous for the cliff walkways and the 999 steps to the gate, and it takes most of a day. Treat it as a city day before or after the national park.
Two nights in the city and three in Wulingyuan town is the usual split. Book the Tianmen cableway for the morning, because afternoon cloud often hides the arch, and keep your luggage at the hotel rather than carrying it up.
Zhangjiajie also works as a stop on a longer route. The Li River cruise at Guilin is a five-hour train ride south, and the attractions index lists the other headline sights, including the Chengdu panda base if you continue west.
FAQ
How long is the park ticket valid?
Four consecutive days from first use, including the shuttle buses. The clock starts at the gate, not at booking, so a late arrival still gives you four full days. Keep the same passport with you.
Do I need to book the park in advance?
Book online for holiday dates and for any combined ticket that includes the Bailong Elevator, so your fare shows on the official page. Outside peak weeks you can usually buy at the gate, but the online queue moves faster and the price is the same.
Are the shuttle buses free to ride?
Yes, inside the park. Your admission covers the green eco-buses between gates, viewpoints and stations. The local bus between Wulingyuan town and Forest Park gate is outside the park and costs about CNY 10.
Can I visit in one day?
You can see Yuanjiajie and the Bailong Elevator in a long day, but you will spend three hours in transfers and queues. Two days is the minimum for a comfortable visit, and three days lets you use different gates.
What should I carry?
A rain shell, grippy shoes for wet stone, water and snacks, and a power bank. Card and mobile payment work at the gates and in town, but some trail kiosks take cash only. See the payments guide.
