Why does the 7:30 ticket decide your visit?

Giant pandas run on a dawn schedule. Keepers put out fresh bamboo before the gates open, and the bears spend the first two or three hours eating, climbing and moving around. By 10:00 most of them are asleep, often flat on their backs or draped over a branch, and they stay that way through the middle of the day. If you arrive at noon, you have bought a ticket to watch pandas sleep.

The entry system makes this sharper. A ticket is valid only for the slot you reserved, and the base turns away visitors who arrive outside their window. The afternoon slot is not a later version of the morning one; it is a different animal, awake again after about 14:00.

Slot Entry time What the pandas do Worth it?
Morning, March–October 7:30–12:00 Bamboo breakfast, climbing, cubs active Yes, the best window of the year
Morning, November–February 8:00–12:00 The same rhythm, an hour later and colder Yes, with warm clothes
Afternoon, March–October 12:00–17:00 Sleep, then feeding from about 14:00 Only if the morning sold out
Afternoon, November–February 12:00–16:30 Short day, sleep, one late feed Weak; the day closes early

The 7:30 opening applies from March to October. In winter the gate opens at 08:00, and the light is lower but the pandas keep the same routine. Either way, aim to be at the gate 15 minutes before your slot, because the shuttle and the security line eat the difference.

Which ticket should you buy?

One ticket, one entry, one slot. The adult ticket costs CNY 55 and covers visitors aged 18 to 59. Students pay CNY 27 with a valid student card. Visitors aged 60 and over enter free with their passport and do not need a reservation. Children under 6, or under 1.3 m, also enter free with ID.

Ticket Price Who qualifies What you need at the gate
Adult CNY 55 Aged 18–59 Passport used for the booking
Student CNY 27 Enrolled students, undergraduate or below Passport and student ID
Senior Free 60 and over Passport; no reservation needed
Child Free Under 6 or under 1.3 m ID document; no reservation needed
Annual pass CNY 168 Aged 7–59, one entry a day Passport; not useful for a short trip

The ticket is valid for one entry only, on the reserved date and slot. It expires after that date, and there is no refund once it has been used. Unused tickets can be refunded through the original channel within 30 days, counting from 17:00 on the day of the visit.

Your ticket does not include Dujiangyan Panda Valley, which has its own booking and price. For both sites, budget two bookings and two days.

Tickets may be reserved online up to 14 days in advance. Sales end when the daily ticket quota is sold out. Visitors with afternoon tickets should not arrive early to avoid long waits.

How do you book with a passport?

Use the base’s own channels. The official WeChat account and the WeChat mini program are the primary route; the authorized platforms are Meituan, Trip.com, Douyin, Tongcheng Travel, the “Chengdu Scenic Shuttle Bus” account and the “Chengdu Tourist Sightseeing Bus” account. Anything offering a paid fast-track entry is a reseller, and the base warns against it.

  1. Follow the account: search WeChat for the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding account. The interface is in Chinese, so keep a translation app open or ask your hotel to help.
  2. Open the ticket menu: tap “Visit & Tickets”, then “Panda Base Tickets”. Choose your date and the morning slot.
  3. Enter your details: name and passport number exactly as printed. One ticket per passport; the gate checks that the ID matches the booking.
  4. Pay and save: pay with a linked foreign card through WeChat Pay or Alipay, then screenshot the QR code. The confirmation also appears in the mini program under “My”.
  5. Bring the passport: the gate scans the original document, not a photo. Visitors without the original go to a separate channel and may wait.

The base says bookings open 14 days ahead. Some guidebooks and resellers still say seven, and agency allocations may appear later, so trust the official page and book as soon as your date appears. In holiday weeks the morning quota can go within hours of release. Set up WeChat Pay before you travel; the payments guide and the internet and apps guide cover the setup.

How do you reach the gate?

The metro is the reliable option. Ride line 3 to Panda Avenue, leave by exit A, and transfer to shuttle bus 408, which runs straight to the South Gate. The shuttle takes about 10 minutes and queues build between 07:00 and 08:00. A second route uses Zoo station on the same line, then bus 655 or 87 to the South Gate.

Route Steps Time and cost
South Gate by metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue, exit A, shuttle 408 About 10 minutes on the shuttle; metro fare a few yuan
South Gate by bus Line 3 to Zoo station, bus 655 or 87 20–30 minutes; slower in traffic
West Gate by metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital, exit B, shuttle 409 About 10 minutes on the shuttle
Taxi from Chunxi Road Direct to the South Gate About CNY 40, 25–35 minutes
Taxi from either airport Shuangliu or Tianfu direct About CNY 100 or CNY 200; 40–70 minutes

Ask the driver for the panda base, not “Panda Avenue”; the avenue is long and the gates are far apart. If you hold an afternoon ticket, do not come early, because the base will not let you in before 12:00. The train guide helps if you arrive in Chengdu by rail.

What should you do in the first two hours?

Go uphill first and leave the lower paths for later. The nurseries and the cub houses are the reason most people come, and they are busiest after 09:00. This order fits a 7:30 entry and gets you out before the midday rush.

  1. 06:50: leave your hotel. The metro is quiet at this hour, and the shuttle queue is short before 07:15.
  2. 07:20: clear security at the South Gate with your passport and QR code ready.
  3. 07:30: walk up to the Sunshine Nursery. Cubs born between July and September are here, behind glass, with mothers or keepers nearby.
  4. 08:00: move to the Moonlight Nursery, then to the adult villas, where keepers put out bamboo, apples and panda bread.
  5. 08:45: watch the feeding at the adult enclosures. This is the busiest half hour for the pandas and the calmest for the paths.
  6. 09:30: red pandas, Swan Lake and the giant panda museum, which opened in 2021 and is the first of its kind.

By 10:00 the pandas are settling down to sleep, and the tour groups are arriving. Use that hour for the museum and the red pandas, then leave by 11:30 or stay for the second feed around 14:00. The base covers 3.07 square kilometers and sits 10 km from Tianfu Square, so the trip out and back is part of the day.

What do the pandas do after 10:00?

They sleep, and they are good at it. A giant panda sleeps 10 to 16 hours a day, in blocks, and the middle of the day is the longest block. You will see animals collapsed on platforms, half in the bamboo, or hanging over a branch with all four legs down. This is normal and not a sign of a bad visit, but it is a reason to book the morning slot.

The base fills the quiet hours with other things. The museum has interactive exhibits on panda biology and conservation, and the red panda walk stays active all day. The keepers feed again around 14:00, so afternoon ticket holders should head straight for the adult villas on entry.

How long should you stay?

Three to four hours is the normal visit: two hours of active pandas, an hour for the museum and the red pandas, and a buffer for walking and crowds. A half day covers everything at a relaxed pace, including a sit-down lunch afterwards. Two hours is enough only if you go straight to the nurseries and leave.

Add 45 minutes each way from the center by metro and shuttle, or 25 to 35 minutes by taxi in light traffic. Morning is faster in both directions.

Chengdu base or Dujiangyan Panda Valley?

They are different sites, run by the same institution, and the choice depends on what you want. The Chengdu base is the convenient one: close to the city, with cubs, a museum and the largest captive population. Panda Valley is the quiet one: a semi-wild valley 50 km away, near Dujiangyan, with a dozen or so pandas and far fewer visitors. The attractions hub lists the other sites that need a timed slot.

Site Distance from Chengdu What you see Ticket and booking
Chengdu base 10 km, about 45 minutes by metro Cubs, adult villas, museum, red pandas CNY 55; reserve up to 14 days ahead
Dujiangyan Panda Valley 50 km, about 1.5 hours by train and taxi 10+ pandas in a wooded valley, quiet paths CNY 55; reserve up to 7 days ahead, no ticket window

Panda Valley is the Chengdu base’s field research center. It opened in 2015, covers 2,004 mu, and exists to prepare pandas for reintroduction. Hours are 7:50–17:30 from May to October and 8:10–17:00 from November to April, and same-day booking closes 30 minutes before the gate does. Take the Chengdu–Dujiangyan intercity train, then a short taxi.

One warning: another panda center also sits near Dujiangyan, run by a different institution. Check the name on your booking. A main-base ticket does not open either Dujiangyan site, and Panda Valley has no offline ticket window at all.

What are the photography rules?

Turn the flash off. The panda houses are shaded and the glass reflects light, so a flash spoils your shot and disturbs the animals. Raise the ISO instead, and shoot through the glass at a slight angle to cut reflections. Drones and skateboards are banned across the site, and the base asks visitors to keep their voices down.

Do not feed or tease the pandas, tap the glass, or try to get a cub in your arms. Cub holding is not offered at either site, and the nurseries are viewing only. Tripods are fine on the open paths; inside the houses, a phone or a handheld camera works better than a kit you have to set up in a crowd.

The best light is early: the outdoor villas face east, and the first hour after opening gives soft side light. By 10:00 the light is flat and the pandas are asleep.

When should you go?

March to May and September to November are the best months: mild temperatures, active pandas and easy walking. Summer is hot and humid, and the pandas move less after 09:00. Winter is cold but quiet, with short queues and clean light.

Avoid Chinese public holidays, especially the first week of October and the Spring Festival week, when the 85,000 daily capacity fills and the shuttle queue stretches down the street. Weekdays are calmer than weekends. The best-time-to-visit guide sets Chengdu’s seasons against the rest of the country, and the Chengdu destination guide covers what else to do with the rest of your day.

FAQ

Do you need to book Chengdu Panda Base tickets in advance?

Yes. All visitors except seniors 60 and over and young children must reserve online, and the base can sell out. Bookings open up to 14 days ahead on the official WeChat account. Same-day tickets are possible only if the daily quota has not been reached.

Is the morning or afternoon ticket better?

The morning ticket. Pandas eat and move from opening until about 10:00, then sleep through the middle of the day. An afternoon ticket cannot enter before 12:00, and the best you get is the second feed around 14:00. If the morning is sold out, take the afternoon and arrive at noon.

How do you get to the panda base by metro?

Take metro line 3 to Panda Avenue station, leave by exit A, and transfer to shuttle bus 408, which goes directly to the South Gate in about 10 minutes. For the West Gate, ride to Junqu General Hospital, exit B, and take shuttle 409.

Can you hold a panda cub?

No. Neither the Chengdu base nor Panda Valley offers cub holding, and the nurseries are viewing only, through glass. Cubs are born between July and September and stay with their mothers. Keep your voice down, skip the flash, and do not tap the glass.

Is the Chengdu ticket valid at Dujiangyan Panda Valley?

No. The two sites have separate tickets and separate booking systems. Panda Valley costs the same CNY 55 and opens its own reservations seven days ahead, with no ticket window on site.

Next step: book the morning slot, then plan the rest of the day with the Chengdu guide and check the dates against the 7-day itinerary or the 14-day itinerary before you lock the train to Xi’an and the Terracotta Warriors.
